Battling Vacation Fatigue? Schedule A Wellness Day

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Vacations, while made to be stress busting, can often be the most physically strenuous things of all. Traveling requires more moving around than you do at home. Even the most fun vacations can be exhausting. The average trip to Disneyland will have you walking around 10 miles per day!  Schedule yourself a relaxing wellness day in between all the other hectic, enjoyable activities that have you on the move.

How to Plan the Perfect Wellness Day While Traveling

When you’re on the go for days—exploring, hiking, sightseeing—your body and mind can hit a wall. That’s why it’s essential to carve out a wellness day during your travels. Think of it as your personal reset: a chance to rest, recover, and feel like yourself again. Here’s how to enjoy a relaxing, rejuvenating day in the middle of your next big adventure.

Battling Vacation Fatigue? Schedule A Wellness Day

Catch Up on Sleep and Hydration

If you’ve been walking non-stop for several days now, you’re probably running low on both sleep and water. Use your relaxation day as a chance to catch up on both. It’s impossible to save things like rest and hydration for later, but if you’ve been missing out, this will be an invaluable moment to recover!

Try to get a full 8 hours of sleep on both sides of your relaxation day and drink at least 4-5 cups of water per 12 hours. This is especially crucial when you’re in a hotter country and have been spending a lot of time outside; you’ve likely sweated out a lot more water than you’re used to, and that will need replenishing fast!

Catch Up on Sleep and Hydration

One of the most important relaxation tips while traveling is to rehydrate and rest. After several days on your feet, your energy levels (and water reserves) are likely running low.

On your wellness day, make this your priority:

  • Get a full 8+ hours of sleep before and after your rest day
  • Drink at least 4-5 cups (1 liter) of water every 12 hours—more in hot or humid climates
  • Add electrolytes to your water to replenish lost minerals
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol to avoid further dehydration

Travel recovery starts with the basics—don’t skip sleep or hydration and expect to feel recharged!

Book into a Local Spa

Every city on earth has a spa or two to its name! Plan ahead and book an appointment where you can be pampered and taken care of. Whether you’d like to get a pedicure or a full body massage that works out all the knots you’ve gained over the past few days, this is your chance to be treated like royalty.

Decide on the treatment you’d like to get the most, book a session at this spa or any other in the city you’re visiting that you like the look of (and the reviews of!). Afterward, go for a relaxing afternoon in an environment made to uplift your sense of wellness.

Book a Local Spa Experience or Massage

A wellness day wouldn’t be complete without some pampering. Most cities—even smaller ones—offer local spa treatments, massage studios, or wellness centers. These are perfect for releasing tension and treating your body after long days of activity.

Consider booking one of the following treatments:

  • Foot massage or pedicure (especially after lots of walking!)
  • Deep tissue or hot stone massage
  • Aromatherapy or full-body relaxation massage
  • Steam room, sauna, or hot springs session if available

Tips for a better spa experience:

  • Check reviews before booking
  • Look for local or culturally inspired treatments
  • Choose a spa close to your accommodation for minimal travel stress

Wellness travel isn’t just about green juice and yoga—sometimes it’s about letting someone else do the relaxing work for you.

Don’t Stray Too Far From Your Accommodation

You can’t take it easy when you’re hightailing it all over the city! That’s why you shouldn’t stray too far from your accommodation during a wellness day.

Spend as much time resting in your hotel room or the hotel’s communal lounge. If you venture outside, don’t go further than a couple of streets. If you need to top up on supplies, look for a shop within this distance.

Stay Close to Your Accommodation

A rest day should actually feel restful—so don’t plan anything that requires lots of travel or energy. Staying close to your accommodation keeps the focus on recovery and lowers the risk of getting sucked back into a busy itinerary.

Ideas for staying local on your wellness day:

  • Spend time lounging in your hotel room or Airbnb
  • Use amenities like a pool, rooftop terrace, or quiet lounge
  • Take a slow walk around your block or visit a nearby café
  • Pick up healthy snacks or hydration essentials from a local shop within walking distance

Travel self-care is all about slowing down—sometimes the best wellness day is the one where you do absolutely nothing.

Plan Your Vacation Wellness Day in Advance

If your trip is packed with excursions, city tours, or active adventures, schedule your wellness day like you would a tour or dinner reservation. Knowing you have a recovery day planned will give your body (and your brain) something to look forward to—and help you stay energized for the rest of your trip.

Pro tip: Add your rest day after 2–3 days of nonstop activity, or before a major travel day like a long flight or train ride.

Got a vacation planned where you’ll be walking everywhere? Make time for a rest day to take the weight off!
