Moving homes is a little like having a baby. Sure, it hurts like hell, but the happy hormones of your new life make you want to do it time and again. Even if you swore that this home would be your last, you find yourself trolling Zillow for hours. Soon, you’ll be calling a real estate agent and preparing to upheave your life all over again.
The house-moving buzz is real, but moving isn’t all sunshine and fun. It’s sweat, tears, and so much stress you could easily blow a gasket.
That’s not to say that you should never move houses again. It does, however, mean you need to ask yourself some difficult questions (which you’ve more than likely been avoiding). You don’t want to commit to a move you might not be equipped for.

# 1 – Why do you want to move?
Knowing why you want to move will highlight whether your reasons are worthy, or subject to change. Practical, solid reasons for moving will generally revolve around life changes. For example, needing to relocate for work or wanting to be within a certain school district. Relocating because you’re bored or fancy a change of scenery, however, isn’t sensible.
While relocating due to property size may seem like one of those practical options, this, too, maybe an ill-advised idea. There’s every chance your existing property has the potential to grow with you. You just need to slow down and check with a home renovation company like Zenith. Seek advise on possible home expansion or renovation projects to enhance your existing space. Freshen your everyday life in ways that a new, unknown property, never could.
# 2 – Are your finances up to the job?
Many homeowners overlook the financial strain, but moving houses can cost a pretty penny. Get your finances in order and then enlist help from a property buying agent. Share this information with them so they can start finding and vetting houses to purchase that are within reason and in your budget. These professionals can ensure the potential property meets all of your criteria, so you don’t waste your time going to showings for houses that aren’t a good fit.Â
The average American pays around $5,000 for things like solicitor fees and moving expenses every time they relocate. If you’re feeling flush, then by all means, take on the expense. But if money is tight, you might want to hold off or seek affordable alternatives like renovation.

# 3 – Is your property market-ready?
It’s not necessary or cost-effective to do a huge renovation before you sell your home. However, you don’t want it on the market in its raw state, either. At least, not if you want to get a good price and sell your home quickly.
This isn’t a problem if you only need to tackle small tasks, like painting and staging rooms. But you may want to hold off on moving until you take care of big tasks, like structural work. These take time. You’ll want to stay in the house for a little while to make those commitments and expenses worthwhile.
